World Livestock Auctioneer Champion to Visit
Southeast Kansas Stockyards in Gas, Kan., July 20

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (July 11, 2012) – Bailey Ballou, this year’s World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, will be at the Southeast Kansas Stockyards in Gas, Kan. (315 S. Main St., Gas, Kan.) on Friday, July 20. The sale will begin at 12:30 p.m. (CT). Ballou will take a turn on the auction block, selling cattle and showing off the chant that made him a world champion auctioneer.
Ballou defeated 32 other contestants to win the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship (WLAC), held this month in Turlock, Calif. The WLAC was created and is conducted by the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA), the national trade association for progressive marketing businesses. During his year as champion, Ballou is traveling across the U.S., appearing at LMA member markets and industry events.
“I’m excited to represent LMA and the livestock industry in the coming year,” Ballou shared. “There are a lot of people out there who are not from an agricultural background, but we have things in common. They care about the livestock, and we care about the livestock. We can use these things in common to explain what we do, in a way they can understand.”
A partner in the Southeast Kansas Stockyards is the 2011 World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, Charly Cummings, who will also be on hand for the sale.
Joining Ballou and Cummings will be the 2012 WLAC runner-up, Brian Little, Wann, Okla.; and top ten finalists Russle Sleep, Bedford, Iowa and Jim Herzog, Butler, Mo.
Livestock markets across the country work hard to bring in multiple buyers to bid competitively on sale day, providing true price discovery of the value of all types of cattle and maximizing the return to the seller. In turn, they provide buyers a centralized location with a ready supply of cattle in the offering. Through this process of bringing buyers and sellers together, the local auction markets create a competitive basis for all other methods of selling cattle. The cash market is always set at the local auction market.
